3.11 Earthquake, Tsunami, Atomic Meltdown and Photo Recovery
Everybody rmemebers the power of the 311 earthquake that caused absolute disaster when it struck off the coast of Sendai, Japan, in which a reported 15,891 deaths were recorded and many others were injured.
The blast and tsunami were so disastrous that just under a million buildings were collapsed, half collapsed, or damaged. With that level of damage and with the serious number of families affected you can imagine the pain at losing photohraphs of loved ones who may not have survived the tragedy.
Ricoh set up the 'Save the Memory Project' as part of its reconstruction support activities after the Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011. Since then more than 400,000 photographs have been recovered and MFP's were used to digitize and store photos on the cloud, so that people can search their stockpile of photographs for images of their loved ones.
